The Santiago Crater is the main active vent at Masaya Volcano National Park. A 2024 landslide buried the open lava lake, but the crater still emits dramatic plumes of sulfur dioxide and a bright red glow at night.

You can drive your vehicle straight to the paved parking lot at the top. For safety, park facing downhill to allow rapid evacuation. The rim area features three main points of interest.

Crater Overlook

5-15 mins (strict)Upwind viewing recommended

A paved viewing terrace with safety railings sits right on the edge of the smoking pit. Park guards strictly enforce a 5 to 15-minute time limit to limit your exposure to toxic sulfur dioxide gases. Stand on the upwind side of the plume. This helps minimize the strong sulfur smell and eye irritation.

Bobadilla Cross (Cruz de Bobadilla)

20 minsAccess depends on gas levels

A 16th-century friar erected this large cross on a nearby hill to exorcise the devil. Climbing the steps gives you a panoramic view of the dark lava fields. Park officials sometimes restrict access to the stairs if gas levels from the crater get too high.
