Your experience at Masaya Volcano National Park depends entirely on the clock. Daytime hours let you explore the park's 54 square kilometers (20 square miles). Evening access is strictly about viewing the glowing vent inside the crater. Both options have different rules, prices, and time limits.
What is the difference between Masaya Volcano during the day and night?
Day tours focus on hiking and geology, while night tours focus on the crater's magma glow.
During the day, you can walk the San Fernando Crater Trail or hike the El Comalito Trail. You also get access to the Geological Museum. At night, hiking is not allowed. Visitors drive directly to the Santiago Crater rim, stay for 5 to 15 minutes to see the incandescent glow, and leave.
How much are the entrance fees?
Daytime entry costs C$180 (about $5 USD), while evening entry costs C$370 (about $10 USD).
These prices apply to foreign visitors paying at the gate. If you book a guided tour, operators usually charge $50 to $80 USD. This fee typically covers your roundtrip transport from Managua or Granada, the park entrance fee, and a guide.

Can you see lava at night in 2026?
You will see an incandescent red glow, but not the bubbling lava lake.
A major landslide in March 2024 buried the open lava lake. The Santiago Crater still emits dramatic plumes of volcanic gas and a glowing red vent visible after dark. You need to visit during the evening hours (4:30 PM to 7:30 PM) to see this glow clearly.
What hikes are available during the day?
Daytime visitors can walk three main trails near the crater and lower park.
- San Fernando Crater Trail: Takes about 30 minutes and shows off an extinct crater.
- El Comalito Trail: Takes 45 minutes and features steam vents.
- 1772 Petrified Lava Flow: A 15-minute walk through jagged black rock.
None of these trails are accessible during the evening hours. Read more about the Visitor Center.

What are the safety rules at the crater?
You are limited to 5 to 15 minutes at the rim due to toxic sulfur dioxide gases.
This limit is strictly enforced during both day and night visits. If you have asthma, stand upwind of the gas plume and carry your inhaler.
Which is better for families with children?
Daytime visits give kids more space to walk and explore the museum.
Night visits involve long lines of vehicles and a very short window at the crater. If you want a more relaxed pace, go during the day. Read more in our guide on Visiting with Kids.
