Getting there
Most visitors take guided tours or drive rental cars from Managua or Granada.
| How | Time | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Car: Drive via the Managua-Masaya highway to Km 23, pay at the gate, and drive the 5 km paved road straight to the crater rim parking lot. | 30-40 mins from Managua or Granada | C$370 (~$10 USD) for evening foreigner entry | Cars must be parked facing the exit downhill for safety reasons. |
| Tour: Book a guided night tour with pickup from Managua or Granada. | 2-4 hours round trip | $50 - $80 USD per person | Highly recommended as guides handle navigation, entry fees, and the strict timing rules at the rim. |
| Bus: Take a minibus from Managua (UCA station) heading to Masaya or Granada and ask to be dropped off at the park entrance. | 45 mins | C$20 (~$0.50 USD) | From the entrance, you either hike 5 km uphill or hitch a ride to the crater, which is not recommended for the night tours. |

Pack closed-toe shoes and a light windbreaker, as the rim gets cold and windy at night. Bring eye drops and a mask to handle the sulfur dioxide gas. If you have asthma, you must carry an inhaler and stand upwind of the gas plume.
